TEENAGE GIRL GANG RAPED, BULLIED BY SLUT-SHAMERS IN RUSSIAN NOVOSIBIRSK
⛔️TRIGGER WARNING: rape, abuse, disturbing visual content
These are censored pictures of Anna Shatova, a 16-year-old student from Novosibirsk, Russia, taken by one of her rapists as they were abusing and humiliating her while she was lying unconscious on their apartment’s floor. The abusers are seen holding their thumbs up: “Yeah, check this b*tch out! That’ll show her!” These photos were shared on Twitter and the most popular Russian social network, VKontakte (a Facebook spin-off) and got thousands, if not millions of views. The perpetrators felt it was okay to flaunt their violence, as if it was a perfectly sound and fun activity for a party night.
Anna was raped by six teenagers at a party on the 23rd of September, 2014. She came there with a male friend who considers himself her boyfriend – and yet was the one to initiate the rape. The company was drinking lots of alcohol and using illegal drugs. At a certain point Anna got so intoxicated that she blacked out. (It is still unclear whether she drank willingly, some speculate she was forced to drink.) Her so-called partner who believed she was cheating on him chose this moment to have his revenge, which meant stripping her naked, shoving various objects, including a lighter and a vodka bottle inside her vagina and finally, gang rape. The rest of the company was ready to join the “fun.” As can be seen from the photo above, not only didn’t they feel any remorse but they actually took pride in their actions. They raped her for several hours on end, and then simply hauled the still unconscious victim out of the apartment and into the stair hall to lie in the cold.
The next day Anna reported the crime to the police. One of the rapists’ father, a wealthy and powerful man, tried to bribe the justice but luckily didn’t succeed. Currently, all of the suspects are in custody waiting for trial. They are facing allegations for gang rape and statutory rape (16 years being below the local age of consent), as well as possession of illegal substances.
So, everything’s going to be okay, right?
Not so fast. From the day the photos got leaked, Anna has been attacked by hordes of hateful, slut-shaming misogynists. Hundreds of people, both men and women, keep leaving aggressive, patronizing or otherwise offensive comments on the incident, blaming the victim, saying that “she had it coming,” that “she shouldn’t have been hanging out with the wrong company,” that her state or the alleged unfaithfulness somehow justified the rapists’ actions, that “the guys just wanted to have fun and got a little out of line” etc, etc. She was repeatedly threatened online and in real life, to the point where the authorities had to include her in a victim protection program for the sake of her emotional and physical safety.
Just take a look at an open poll from the aforementioned Russian network.
The most horrifying part? The poll was posted in a group that was supposed to support Anna. The rape apologists were more than eager to invade the specifically arranged safe space and voice their contempt for the victim. As of now, more than 9,400 VK users picked the rapists’ side – and that’s just those who bothered to vote.
Anna’s case is a glaring example of rape culture’s prevalence in Russia. Please spread this information to let the world know of the despicable crimes and hatred which are still happening here, to make sure the justice is served as it has to be, and to prevent further violence against Anna and her family.
No mercy for rapists! Support Anna Shatova!
I know it’s selfish but I hope you kiss me really hard next time I see you
Things I wish I could tell you (via latelycravingmore)
we’ve taught girls to romanticise nearly everything a boy does. when i was younger i thought it was cute that boys chased the girl even after she said no. i loved it when after a girl moved away from a kiss, the guy would pull her back and force it on. i thought a guy saying ‘i won’t take a no for an answer’ was passionate and romantic. we’re literally always teaching girls to romanticise abusive traits.
